any one of the skeletal coverings made of calcite that protect a coccolithophore. In a fossilized state coccoliths form chalk and limestone deposits, such as the White Cliffs of Dover. »

Bodies similar to these “coccoliths” were aggregated together into spheroids…termed “coccospheres” (Thomas Huxley).
